Helgeson wins first match at NCAA Championships

May 21, 2008

Notre Dame, Ind. - Notre Dame junior Brett Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) advanced to the round of 32 at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships in Tulsa, Okla., with a two-set victory (6-3, 6-1) over Chris Clayton of Harvard in the round of 64 at Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.

After a slight delay due to a back-log of matches, Helgeson and Clayton took the court and Helgeson dominated from the start. He picked up a 6-3 victory in the first set before jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in the second and eventually securing the match with a 6-1 win.

Helgeson will advance to the round of 32 on Thursday, May 22, where he will play the winner of this afternoon's match between Georgia's Luis Flores and Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State. Nedovyesov is the number three overall seed in the field. The time of tomorrows match is to be determined once the round of 32 is complete.
