Men's Soccer Shuts Out Boston College

October 24, 1998

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. ---- Junior midfielder Andrew Aris (Auckland, New Zealand) scored two goals and senior Matt Johnson (Livermore, Calif.) added another score and an assist to lead the Notre Dame men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout at Boston College as the Irish rebounded from their loss Wednesday at Boston College.

Aris' two goals marked the second time in three games that the Irish junior tallied a pair in a contest. Against Seton Hall on October 21, Aris netted both of Notre Dame's goals in the 2-0 victory over the Pirates.

With the win, Notre Dame remained in contention to earn a spot in the eight-team BIG EAST tournament field as the Irish improved to 8-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in league play. Boston College dropped its second straight contest as Eagles fell to 5-8-2, 2-6-1 in the BIG EAST.

Boston College outshot the Irish 10-5 in the game and owned an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Notre Dame had three shots in the first 45 minutes and two in the second as the Irish made good on both of their second half attempts.

The Eagles controlled the game until the 36th minute when Aris got behind the defense to head the ball off assists from Johnson and Ryan Cox (Broadview Hts, Ohio) past Eagle goalkeeper Chris Hamblin.

Aris' second score game off an assist from Shane Walton (San Diego, Calif.) at 76:05 and Johnson tallied his first goal of the season off a feed from Dustin Pridmore (Dallas, Tex.) just over a minute later at 77:32.

Hamblin made just one save in goal for the Eagles, while Irish goalkeeper Greg Velho (Longwood, Fla.) came up with two saves.

Notre Dame returns to action on Friday, October 30 when it plays host to West Virginia at 7:30 p.m. in the final regular season contest of the 1998 campaign.
