Aris scores two goals in Irish victory.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame men's soccer team got a much-needed BIG EAST win as the Irish, behind Andrew Aris' (Auckland, New Zealand) two goals, shutout 13th-ranked Seton Hall 2-0. The win improves Notre Dame's record to 7-4-3 on the season and 3-3-2 in the BIG EAST.

It was the first league victory for the Irish since they posted a 2-1 overtime victory at Villanova on September 20. In its three league tests prior to Seton Hall, Notre Dame had gone 0-2-1 in those contests.

Aris had the first multiple-goal game of his career in the victory. He tallied the first score 1:34 into the contest when he headed in Matt Johnson (Livermore, Calif.) into the left corner of the net on ball that was fed from the right side of the field by Scott Wells (Phoenix, Ariz.).

Notre Dame outshot the Pirates 7-6 in the first half. Both goalkeepers played extremely well with Irish goalkeeper Greg Velho (Longwood, Fla.) coming up with three saves and Pirate keeper Derek Martin coming up with five in the first 45-minute stanza.

Aris' second goal was scored off a penalty kick after Ryan Cox (Broadview Hts., Ohio) was fouled in the penalty box by Jan Rickel.

The Irish outshot Seton Hall, which fell to 8-3-3 and 4-3-2, 14-13 and had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Velho finished with five saves, while Martin made eight stops in the game.

Notre Dame plays its next two games on the road with contests at Providence and Boston College. The Irish meet the Friars on Wednesday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. and then play the Eagles on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m.
